Depictions of parrots and other exotic birds became popular in the Pietre Dure works of the 17th century, when a wider variety of hard stones became available and the cutting skills of the stone workers became more precise, allowing them to produce much more detailed and complex compositions. Panels such as the present example were used to ornament large cabinets as well as other pieces furniture, such as the commode by Adam Weisweiler (1744-1820) now in the Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace.
