Year/Century: 19th century Language: English Subject: Science & Medicine Binding: Leather Description: The first almanack for the year of our Lord 1828 was THE GENTLEMAN’S DIARY, also known as the MATHEMATICAL REPOSITORY. It was published after leap year and bissextile year. Including a great deal of fascinating and helpful information that is specifically tailored for clever gentlemen who enjoy studying and practicing mathematics. This is the 88th almanack of this type to be produced, and the 76th of the New style in England. First edition, London: Printed for the Company of Stationers by J.B. Nichols; includes seven different almanacs issued by the Company in 1828. This version features the following books: Old Poor Robin, Speculum Anni by Henry Season, The Celestial Atlas by Robert White, The Gentleman’s Diary by Thomas Leybourne, The Ladies’ Diary by Olinthus Gregory, Vox Stellarum by Francis Moore, and Merlinus Liberatus by John Partridge. By 1801, the English Stock, or list of titles maintained by the Company of Stationers, had grown to twenty-five titles. These included the Gentleman’s Diary and Ladies’ Diary, which were regarded as respectable titles despite their limited circulation, and Francis Moore’s Vox Stellarum, which Katherine Anderson referred to as “astrological crude, and immensely profitable.” Since the eighteenth century, pseudonymous writers have penned the satirical Poor Old Robin series, which has been criticized for being “execrable poison,” “a farrago of filth, obscenity, and stupidity,” and “a representative of the insulting absurdities through which the Stationers’ Company made money. from a public taste for superstition and degraded buffoonery” (Wardhaugh, 231).
